PREHEAT oven to 350F.

SPRINKLE sugar over work surface; PLACE pastry atop sugared surface; ROLL out to 1/8-inch thickness.

BEAT egg with milk to form glaze; BRUSH glaze lightly over pastry.

In a small bowl, COMBINE sugar, lemon peel and anise seed; SPRINKLE over pastry.
5.
CUT pastry crosswise into 1-inch wide strips.
6.
PICK UP each pastry strip, TWIST several times; PLACE on ungreased cookie sheet; PRESS ends onto sheet to prevent unrolling.
7.
BAKE until golden brown and crisp, about 20 minutes.
8.
REMOVE immediately; PLACE on rack to cool.
