In a large bowl, MIX dry ingredients well.
In a medium bowl, MIX eggs, buttermilk, and melted butter.
WISK wet into dry. ADD more buttermilk to thin, if needed (see notes).
Add more buttermilk to reach desired consistency: the batter should pour off the ladle in one consistent slow stream, but should be on the verge of breaking up when it is poured.
