1.

In a medium mixing bowl, STIR together the flour, ginger, soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt; SET aside.

2.

In a large mixing bowl, BEAT shortening until softened.

3.

Gradually ADD the 2 cups granulated sugar; BEAT until fluffy.

4.

ADD eggs and molasses; BEAT well.

5.

ADD half of flour mixture; BEAT until combined; STIR in remaining flour with a wooden spoon.

6.

Using a 1/4 cup ice cream scoop, SHAPE dough into 2-inch balls; ROLL balls in the coarse/granulated sugar; PLACE on an ungreased cookie sheet about 2 1/2 inches apart.

7.

BAKE at 350F until cookies are light brown and puffed, about 12-14 minutes (cookies will not be chewy if overbaked).

8.

Let STAND for two minutes; TRANSFER to a wire rack; thoroughly COOL.
