HEAT milk and margarine or shortening in a small pan until margarine is melted and bubbles form around the edges of the pan; COOL.
In a large mixer bowl, COMBINE 1 1/2 cups of flour, sugar and salt.
STIR in milk mixture.
ADD yeast (which has been dissolved in the warm water) and the egg (also see note); BEAT until well combined.
Gradually ADD enough of the remaining flour to make a soft dough.
COVER dough with plastic wrap and PLACE in warm spot; LET RISE until double in bulk.
STIR down dough; TURN out on floured board and divide into two balls; LET REST for 10 minutes.
ROLL each ball into a 12 inch circle; BRUSH with melted butter; CUT into 8 pie-shaped wedges.
ROLL each wedge, starting from the longest side; PINCH point to seal.
PLACE on lightly greased cookie sheet; cover and let rise until double.
BAKE at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.
